PROcruit C Industry Forum, initiated by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust and organised by HKCSS, was successfully held on 10 December 2021. Guest speakers shared their views on ESG (Environment, Social and Governance) industry and inspired participants to actively respond to the rapid development of ESG. Around 130 participants joined the hybrid forum, including PROcruit C Employers and Trainees, corporates and NGO partners and undergraduates.

The forum started by a sharing of Ms Winnie Yip, Executive Manager of Charities (Grant Making – Arts, Culture, Heritage and Talent Development) of The Hong Kong Jockey Club. She introduced the concept that PROcruit C promotes, which the programme supports youths who are interested in ‘Caring is a Profession’ career, by providing them a series of training including on-boarding training, a year-long traineeship and on-the-job training, and helping them to understand and enhance their VASK (Values, Attitudes, Skills, Knowledge) throughout the traineeship.

Prof. Carlos Lo, Director of Centre for Business Sustainability of The Chinese University of Hong Kong shared that more and more corporates see ESG as an important element in their business development, leading to a rapid increase of demand for ESG talents. ‘Talent in ESG industry is shifting from experience-based to knowledge-based. ESG has become a professional career and provides a life-long career ladder’.

Ms Kathy Cheung Tesvich, Head of Corporate Responsibility of Hang Seng Bank believed that the ESG industry is suitable for youths to explore their careers with its unbounded possibilities. ‘No matter what major you are studying at the university, you can find your way to develop in the sustainability industry. The collaboration between various professions will create opportunities.’

Ms Joyce Leung, Senior Corporate Affairs & Culture Manager of Fimmick Limited compared the progress of job-seeking and self-exploring to an onion. ‘The outermost layer is the industry that you are eager to join; the middle layer is to look for a corporate and to observe its working culture and career prospects; the inner layer is your passion.’ Leung mentioned that youths must keep their passion while exploring their desired careers layer by layer.

Apart from passion, young people’s creativity is another important element to push forward the development of the ESG industry. Ms Jojo Chu, Corporate Communication Manager of New Life Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association believed that youth can bring positive impacts to the overall society with their creative mindset to analyze social issues in a different way. Chu encouraged youths not to look down on themselves and to count on their unbounded potentials.

Last but not least, sharing from PROcruit C Employers and Trainees, including Ms Ophelia Lin, Founder and Managing Director of Meiriki Japan Company Limited and their trainee Ms Maggie Cheng, and Ms Leontine Chuang, CEO of the American Club Foundation and their trainee Ms Shirley Kwan, echoing with Yip’s introduction on the concept of PROcruit C programme. They agreed that PROcruit C allowed youths to better prepare and learn about themselves before entering the industry while allowing employers to discover and cultivate ESG talents.

To end the forum, guest speakers emphasized the unbounded possibilities of ESG industry, the potential of young people, and the importance of staying passionate about the work. Youths are encouraged to look for a career that has a passion for, ‘find yourself at work, and find the meaning of the work!’
