Workshop on Caring for the Elderly - “Nutrition for Elderly”

In order to facilitate working carers of the elderly in balancing their work and caring responsibilities, a series of workshops on elderly care have been organised this year by the HKCSS. The third workshop namely “Nutrition for Elderly” was successfully held on 8 December 2011, with the guest speaker Mr Jeffrey Lee, Vice-chairman of Hong Kong Dietitians Association, to share his insights on nutrition with over 20 working carers.

Progress in vaccine (medicine), stress, eating habits and lacking of exercise are major causes of chronic disease nowadays, elderly are advised to keep regular meals at least 3 times a day with regular portions (with portion sizes of 3 in breakfast time, and 4 & 3 for lunch and dinner), as well as staying in good mood and maintaining a habit of doing outdoor exercise. Apart from this, carers are suggested to provide additional micronutrient to the elderly such as vitamins, mineral and antioxidant to activate metabolism which could help maintain healthiness of the elders.

This workshop series is sponsored by the Community Chest of Hong Kong.
