Workshop on Caring for the Elderly - “Elderly with Depression”

In order to facilitate working carers of the elderly in balancing their work and caring responsibilities, a series of workshops on elderly care have been organised this year by the HKCSS. The forth workshop namely “Depression of Elderly” was successfully held on 13 April 2012, with the guest speaker Ms Kiwi Yip, RSW (Vital Employee Service Consultancy), to share her experience with over 30 working carers on taking care of elders with depression.

The elderly people who are suffering from depression, their symptoms are similar to that of the patients with dementia. Depression, if left untreated, affects both physical and mental health. Therefore seek help if in doubt; and persuade those who are depressed to get help.

The carers also need to pay attention to their own mental conditions; they need proper channels to release the stress of being carers to the elders, in order to regain strength so as to revitalize themselves.

This workshop series is sponsored by the Community Chest of Hong Kong.
