Family Summit 2014 - In Celebration of the 20th Anniversary of International Year of the Family

To echo the call from the United Nations to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of IYF in 2014, the Family Summit 2014 was co-organized by the Family Council, Social Welfare Department, Hong Kong Council of Social Service and the Consortium of Institutes on Family in the Asian Region (CIFA) on 15th May, 2014 the International Day of the Family in Hong Kong.

The Acting Chief Executive of the HKSAR, Mrs. Carrie Lam was the Guest of Honor who delivered a keynote on “Reflection on policy, development and practices for families in Hong Kong”. It was followed by 4 plenary sessions, covering a wide range of topics, including “Insights from the findings of Family Survey 2013”, “Family impact assessment framework”, “Singapore experience in building a family friendly society” and “Cross sectors efforts in building a family friendly society in Community Health, Food and Nutrition, Living and Environment, Travel and Leisure”.

8 concurrent sessions on various topics, including “Financial education for families”, “Post-separation and co-parenting”, “Family play and reading through community partnership”, “Parent education in school setting”, “What media can do in building family resilience”, “Adopting positive psychology”, “Cross generational solidarity and positive caregiving” and “Smart use of IT in facilitating family cohesion” were conducted in two batches in the morning and afternoon sessions. The Family Summit provided a golden opportunity for many professionals of different disciplines to come together to address the many issues facing families.

With the concerted efforts of all, the Summit was a great success with an attendance of around 450 from various sectors, including the public, private, NGOs, tertiary institutes, professional bodies as well as charitable foundations. Most of the participants found the Summit a useful platform to converge professional wisdom in contributing to the well being of families and providing concrete solutions in addressing the challenges faced by families. Participants were particularly impressed by the innovative and creative “think-out-of-the-box” approach adopted in the Summit. Links have been established and there are already discussions on future collaborations and exchange.
